Richmond International Raceway Hosts Final Race Before Sprint Cup Chase: 4 Spots Still Up For Grabs!

Clint Bowyer and the Jack Daniel's 07 Chevy Impala is sitting in 12th spot, on the bubble, with the final race set for Saturday September 6th, 2008. He is not safely in that position, and needs to qualify and race well on this Saturday Night Shoot Out!

Denny Hamlin in the #11 FedEx Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota is 76 points ahead of Bowyer in 11th place. That seems to be a good lead in points, but we have seen before that anything can happen, especially during Saturday Night racing on a short track.

Six drivers will be fighting for the final 4 spots in the Sprint Cup Chase. Even 8th place Tony Stewart in the Home Depot #20 Toyota is not safe with a lead of 121 points over the 12th place Bowyer.

Kasey Kahne is in 12th, 48 points back from the spot to get his #9 Budweiser Dodge in the Chase for the Cup. If he  qualifies, and races well, he has a good chance of getting in the Chase, but will have to hope for some bad luck for David Ragan and Clint Bowyer.

All of this equals up to an exciting race in at Richmond International Raceway, on a Saturday night, with everything on the line for some drivers. This is do or die for those not locked in, and for the ones sitting just outside the bubble.

So, tighten up those belts, get up on that steering wheel, this will be NASCAR racing at its finest!

Jimmie Johnson 3Peat - Is it Sprint Cup History in the Making?

For some reason, I had been thinking this was going to be Kyle Busch or Carl Edwards year to win the Cup. It is easy to wrapped up in what is happening now, and forget about the other 12 drivers in the Chase for the Cup. How can we rule out Jimmie Johnson?

Johnson repeated his championship run last year, putting his name up there with a handful of GREAT drivers including Dale Earnhardt Sr, David Pearson, Richard Petty, and Jeff Gordon just to name a few who repeated championship seasons.

This alone is an accomplishment which makes him a driver to be remembered in NASCAR history.  Repeating a Sprint Cup Championship is no easy feat, especially in this era of racing, when the competition has never been more intense. NASCAR drivers are getting younger, faster and more clever. Some people think once a driver reaches 30 he has past his prime.

Sprint Cup drivers like Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne are emerging at very young ages while just next season 18 year old Joey Legano will drive the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet for Joe Gibbs Racing.

So, if Jimmie Johnson were to 3peat his name would only be mentioned with one other driver, Cale Yarborough. Can he do it? We will find out over the next 11 races, but I can guarantee you Johnson thinks he can, I think he can, thousands of other fans think he can, even a handful of so called NASCAR experts think he can. But, that doesn't mean it will happen.

Just in case you forgot, Johnson was 6th in points after the California race last year. It was his unbelievable 4 wins in a row out of the last 5 races in the Chase that earned him his championship last year. He won at Martinsville, then Atlanta, then Texas, then Phoenix and finished 7th at Miami-Homestead to beat Jeff Gordon by 77 points. Yes, 4 races in a row! If Jimmie Johnson can come on that strong for the finish this year, he WILL 3peat!

Cautions & Rain Don’t Slow Down Kasey Kahne at Pocono

Kasey Kahne won the Pocono 500 from the pole, despite 11 cautions & Rain delays, to get to victory lane.

At the start of the race Kasey Kahne leads the field into turn 1 with high expectations but the day would prove frustrating for many drivers.  On lap 60 the caution flew because of a multi-car wreck, when #10-Carpentier, #38-Gilliland & #77-Hornish Jr. Amazingly #45-Terry Labonte dodged the wreck.

On lap 70 Rain brought the Red Flag out, everone had time to contemplate strategy, but no work can be done on the car during red flag delays.

Juan Montoya and Clint Bowyer tangled on lap 81 bring out another caution. (Bowyer was passing the 15 of Paul Menard when he got loose and turned sideways off of the third corner. Unfortunately, Montoya had no where to go and slammed into the side of Bowyer catching fire in the process.)

One scary incident occured on rit Road when #16-Greg Biffle hit a crew member and then gets tagged by #26-Jamie McMurray.

On lap 129 Kasey Kahne took the lead away from Jimmie Johnson. And only dropped to 3rd place once before the end of the race.  Kasey Kahne re-took the lead at the end and wins from the pole at Pocono!
